The Sanctuary
ADT’s Sanctuary is a permanent home to a wide variety of animal species, ranging from household pets, to horses, to exotic animals. One of our most exotic residents is a pair of nearly extinct African desert tortoises.
At the Sanctuary, some of our animal visitors are permanent guests, while others stay only temporarily. Often our transient guests are being rehabilitated from neglect or abuse until we can find them a new “forever” home. The Sanctuary is also a learning environment. We have taught young people who had never worked in a garden before how to plant. The organic food from our garden, with soil amended from the manure of our animals, fed four local needy families one summer without a single trip to buy produce at a market. Another year a group of young people harvested apples from the Sanctuary trees and took them to Skid Row to feed the homeless.
Most people don’t realize it, but one of the many ways that animals can contribute to the planet, and to people, is through their waste. At the Sanctuary, we sell our manure to local residents and nurseries for gardeners to use as an organic way amend their soil. People are amazed at the results! And the money earned goes back to caring for the animals.
